Restricted plumbers

Among the changes to Minnesota's plumbing laws made by the 2007 Legislature was the requirement, effective Dec. 1, 2007, that throughout the state all persons working at the business of interior plumbing must be licensed plumbers or registered apprentices.

The 2007 Legislature established the new "restricted" licenses for work in cities with less than 5,000 population and rural areas, where previously plumbers did not have to be licensed (although they were required to be bonded).  The law allowed people with restricted licenses to perform plumbing everywhere in the state except in cities with a population of more than 5,000.  The original deadline to apply for the restricted license was Dec. 31, 2007. The 2008 Legislature then extended the application deadline to Oct. 1, 2008. The 2009 Legislature then opened a 15-day window from Oct. 1 through 15, 2009, for applications to be submitted.

Application deadline and requirements

Per Minnesota Statute 326B.475, no new applications for restricted master plumber or restricted journeyman plumber will be accepted or approved.
