The information you provide in the BLS Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illness is used by:

  • the federal and state governments to allocate workplace safety resources and to evaluate workplace safety and health programs;

  • researchers and epidemiologists working to identify and reduce the incidence of workplace injuries and illnesses;

  • workplace safety and health professionals to provide services to employers; and

  • employers to compare their workplaces to the industry benchmarks.

Even if your workplace has no injuries and illnesses during the survey year, you are required to complete the survey form. In fact, most small employers participating in the survey do not report any injury or illness cases.
