Minnesota Rural Electric Association (MREA)

Overview

There are multiple residential lineworker programs registered throughout greater Minnesota. Below is a list of typical entry requirements for these programs. Apprenticeship programs registered through MREA hire new apprentices on an as-needed basis. Contact MREA directly to learn more about individual apprenticeship opportunities, locations and requirements.
 
Lineworker apprentice entry requirements:

  • Must be 18 years or older.

  • Must be physically able to work outside in all weather conditions and comfortable working at heights.

  • Must be available to work on an “on-call basis” outside of normal work hours including overnights, weekends and holidays.

MREA member utilities may require:

  • The completion of an accredited lineworker program. The following community colleges in Minnesota offer lineworker programs:

    • Dakota County Technical College, Rosemount

    • M State Wadena, Wadena

    • Minnesota West Community and Technical College, Jackson

  • Possess a Class A commercial driver's license, or the ability to obtain one upon accepting employment.

  • Reside within a set radius, often within 30 minutes, of the company’s operation center.
